Tourism in Kenya has a legendary past. Before independence, early British settlers retreated to the wilderness to hunt, pioneering the original "safari" (Swahili for journey). Following independence in 1963, a transformative shift began. The Kenyan government banned all hunting in 1977, converting vast tracts of land into protected national parks.
